“We commend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for its comprehensive approach to community engagement,” said APLU President Peter McPherson. “Partnering with the communities they serve to address common challenges is at the heart of the mission of public universities. UNCG’s work to improve access to health care for marginalized communities is a powerful example of the role public universities play in this space. “
UNCG is recognized for its multi-pronged approach to increasing access to culturally appropriate scholarships and community engagement. Through initiatives such as the Immigrant Health ACCESS (IHAP) project, which is part of the UNCG Center for New North Carolinians (CNNC), UNCG has helped create multidirectional pathways to health care for marginalized communities.
IHAP reaches over 700 uninsured immigrant and refugee adults in Greensboro each year. CNNC is transforming services to refugees and immigrants just as it is also transforming understanding and scholarship about the issues facing these communities. CNNC students, faculty and community researchers have contributed to 25 peer-reviewed publications and more than 20 practitioner-focused publications and reports.
“This is an exciting opportunity for the work of CNNC to be nationally recognized and potentially replicated by other higher education institutions,” said CNNC Director Dr Diya Abdo. “Refugee and immigrant communities across the country can greatly benefit from these resources. “
In June, UNCG was named one of four regional winners of the WK Kellogg Foundation Community Engagement Scholarship. These regional winners, nominated in collaboration with the Engagement Scholarship Consortium, automatically become finalists for the National Magrath Prize. Each of the other three WK Kellogg Prize winners received $ 5,000 to support their community engagement efforts.
