Richard Tharp receives KSU Tuscarawas Community Service Award


Men’s basketball head coach Richard Tharp was honored at the KSU Tuscarawas Annual Spring 2022 Awards Ceremony last Friday at the Performing Arts Center.

Tharp was the recipient of the Outstanding Community Involvement Staff Award, as part of the Dean’s Special Recognition and Academic Excellence Awards which were presented to honored students on Friday evening.

Under his leadership, the Golden Eagles men’s basketball team hosted a Special Olympics Tuscarawas County Rockets basketball game at Founders Hall Gym and painted positive messages on a Buddy bench that was placed on a playground. of local school. The team will also host a basketball skills camp for the Rockets in May, as well as two basic basketball camps for local kids at KSU Tuscarawas’ first-ever “Summer of Fun” celebration this summer. .

Also worth noting is the fact that Tharp often makes sure his players aren’t hungry and that they go back and forth between practices and games. He’s also been known to bring players home for weekend and vacation visits.

In presenting the award to Tharp, KSU Tuscarawas athletic director Rob Brindley referenced the coach’s service to others with a quote from legendary UCLA coach John Wooden, saying, “‘You can’t not have a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you. And those are words for all of us and those who best describe Coach Tharp’s life compass.

Coach Tharp has just completed his sixth year at the helm of the Golden Eagles men’s basketball team. The team made it to the USCAA National Basketball Championships and won a first-round game before pulling out of the tournament with five-point losses to the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked teams in consecutive days.
