Planning a community around existing forests and fresh air won a local developer this year’s Community Development Award from BILD Central Alberta.

The community development award went to Sixty West, a real estate development in Sylvan Lake set among five acres of forest with more than 700 homes and more trails, parks and ponds.

“Winning the Community Development Award was a great pleasure for us,” said Doug McGill, President of Sixty West. “We are very honored to have our development recognized in this way by our industry peers within the BILD association; after spending so many years transforming our dream of what a beautiful and healthy community should look like, into reality, what ultimately became Sixty West and Waterford Station.

“We share this honor with many others who have believed in the vision and contributed immensely to this journey. We (owe) a huge debt of gratitude to many people.

McGill said a focus on health, happiness and connection to nature was the motivation behind the creation of the new housing estate, located west of 60th Street on the westernmost edge of Sylvan Lake.

“We realized early on that people’s lifestyle expectations were changing,” McGill said. “Why doesn’t everyone feel like they live in a park? These thoughts became our motivation to create the vision of Sixty West in a perfectly hilly and well wooded quarter section of character land with a forest in the centre.

“We wanted to create a community where people are drawn out of their homes to beautiful surroundings, to walk around, meet and mingle with their neighbors and breathe in the fresh air. These things seem to be emotionally uplifting and good for the soul. We hope to have accomplished all of this.

Instead of first bulldozing the land and then giving back to nature, the community was planned around existing nature.

McGill is also excited about the future of Waterford Station, a 20-acre shopping/retail centre. Blackstone Developments plans to become a regional attraction when completed.

Currently, three retail businesses are open. Future plans include a restaurant, large grocery store, and other nationally branded stores and services.

The BILD Central Alberta Awards for Home Builders, Developers and Allied Trades were presented in May.
