Students at Pennington School engaged in several events designed to support local organizations over the past month.
Several students have volunteered at the Hopewell Valley Mobile Food Pantry, which helps people in need of a helping hand. Using the public school bus system and fully volunteer workers, the pantry collects, sorts, packs and delivers groceries and fresh produce every week.
Students in Pennington packed numerous bags of food on October 26 which were delivered to families in Ewing and Hopewell at the weekend, according to information provided by the school.
Another group of Pennington students are working on Jared Boxes to donate to pediatric patients at a local hospital. After collecting toys, books and crafts from students, parents and faculty in Pennington, the group will create the Jared Boxes.
A Jared Box is a shoe-sized plastic storage box filled with small gifts, toys, games, crayons, coloring books, and fun activities. Each box contains items selected for a specific age and gender. The boxes are given to children at the hospital to provide a special and fun diversion, according to its website.
Last year, more than 100 Jared boxes were assembled at school and delivered to young children, bringing joy to those confined to hospital, the statement said.
Pennington’s The Community Service Club also coordinated a very successful hygiene donation campaign for Afghan refugees living at McGuire-Fort Dix Air Base. The group plans to support refugees throughout the year and will participate in another campaign early in the new year, the statement said.
Faculty members Tiernan Close and David Hallgren, who lead community service efforts at the school, said in the statement: “It’s great to see students being socially aware and stepping up to help those in need.“
Pennington School is an independent coeducational school for grades 6 to 12, day programs and boarding. The program is college preparatory, with an emphasis on individual excellence, fostering the development of the entire student through academics, athletics, community service, and the creative and performing arts. .
