DUBAI, 26th June, 2022 (WAM) — During the first half of 2022, the Ministry of Community Development organized 5 sign language courses targeting 86 employees from various government and private sectors to facilitate communication with the hearing impaired and spread the language signs among public sector employees to ensure service quality and work efficiency.
Several level one and two courses offered to a number of staff from Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Dubai Residency and Foreign Affairs Branch as well as of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
Wafa Hamad Bin Sulaiman, director of the welfare and rehabilitation department at the Ministry of Community Development, said that the Ministry of Community Development, through these specialized courses, aims to promote the inclusion of people with hearing loss in society and to give determined people the means to obtain their fundamental rights and the best services.
She added that sign language courses for government sector personnel included a set of knowledge pillars such as introduction to sign language, history and importance for deaf people, learning reading facial expressions, body movements and connotations and the difference between sign languages. Classes also included a definition of hearing loss (deaf), an introduction to deaf culture, Emirati dialect language signs, digital alphabets, and word formation training through finger spelling, finger identification family signals, colors, states, days of the week, numbers, signals from the work environment and the formation of correct sign language sentences for communication with deaf people.
