Community service ordered for young man found with stolen cannabis and fire sticks


A 21-year-old man who pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis and the theft of two Amazonian fire sticks has been sentenced to 240 hours of community service instead of jail time.

onas Weakliam had previously admitted possession of cannabis and possession of cannabis for sale or supply on Balbriggan beach last summer and the case was adjourned to give the defendant more time to engage with the services of probation.

The accused, with an address in Cardy Rock Crescent, Balbriggan, also pleaded guilty to stealing two amazon firesticks and Samsung headphones worth €280 from the DPD warehouse, Harry Reynolds Road, Balbriggan on November 25 2020. The case had been adjourned when he came to Swords District Court in January to allow time to prepare a probation report.

Defense barrister Fiona D’Arcy said the defendant’s first urine test had been submitted and he had signed up with probation services. She said that although the defendant had other charges, he has now resolved his drug addiction and is doing well.

Judge Dermot Dempsey ordered the defendant to perform 240 hours of community service instead of a three-month sentence for drug possession. On possession of drugs for sale or supply, he ordered the defendant to enter into a probationary obligation for one year,
