City of Geneva Seeking Community Development Planning Assistant – Kane County Connects


The City of Geneva is looking for an energetic and motivated individual to fill the position of Assistant Urban Planner within the Department of Community Development. The ideal candidate must be ready to take the next step in their career and make an impact.

The Assistant Planner reports to the Director of Community Development and participates in a number of current and long-range planning activities by conducting research, collecting data, managing records, and updating the city’s website. regarding current and planned developments.

The position interacts frequently and assists the public by providing information on building permits and development processes.

The successful candidate will participate in and help coordinate the interdepartmental review process; assist in the review of proposed site plans, subdivisions, zoning amendments, special use applications and permit applications.

The Associate Planner will attend and make presentations to the Planning and Zoning Commission and Historic Preservation Commission, create maps and sketches, visit development sites, update GIS databases, aAssist in the implementation of the overall city plan, provide administrative support and perform other assigned duties.

Requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in urban planning or related field (with coursework in areas such as urban planning, land use planning, architecture, historic preservation, economic/community development, public administration, transportation planning, landscape architecture or engineering).

One year of professional experience in municipal or regional planning, including project review, long-range planning, research, data collection and analysis, and data mapping.

Opportunity to attend evening meetings once or twice a month. Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the job.

Special needs

Preferred candidates will demonstrate strong project management, time management and problem solving skills. Experience in software applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite and ESRI ArcGIS is strongly desired.

Applicants should be able to speak and present effectively in front of large public groups, have a good understanding of planning, urban design, historic preservation and economic development principles, possess well-developed service skills customer service and be able to maintain professional working relationships with colleagues, contractors, developers and the general public.
